Educational Profile


The level of education in Antigua and Barbuda is quite high; approximately 90% population is literate. The delivery of education is responsibility of the government. The early childhood education is meant for children age between 3 to 5 years. Churches and private individuals provide education at this level with technical help from the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. According to UNICEF's report the enrollment at pre primary level was 3 024 during 1996 - 97.

Government and private schools provide the primary level education for children age between 5 to 12 years. The emphasis is mainly given on academics. Secondary level education (for children between 12 to 17 years age) gives focus on both academics and technical and vocational areas. At this level students learns skills to be utilized in personal and work life.

For the students who wish to continue learning, there is Tertiary Level Education. The three higher learning institutes viz the University of West Indies - School of Continuing Studies, the Antigua State College and the Hotel Training School provides education at this level. There is also a government owned state college in Antigua as well as the Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Information Technology (ABIIT).
